MAGICAL POND
In November of 2007 I packed up my RV, Clementine, my best friend Lakota Sunrise and headed for the west coast. By January 2008 we found ourselves in my old stomping grounds, Marin County, California. Back in the eighties I had lived in Tiburon when I was working as an investment banker in San Francisco and had spent many wonderful weekends exploring the area. After a nearly twenty-year absence it felt wonderful to be back.
My two most favorite things to do in life are exploring wild places with my camera and eating well. Whilst living in Marin I had discovered the wonders of the Point Reyes National Seashore and the delights of the Rouge et Noir Cheese Factory. It just so happens that in order to get to Point Reyes you must pass by the cheese factory. I could never just pass by. Their domestic Brie rivals any imported French I have ever eaten. Not only is the cheese marvelous but also they offer a peaceful setting by a lovely little pond where you can enjoy a picnic.
I had already stopped in for my Brie fix on my way to the Seashore and was on my way home to the RV Park in Novato. It was late. The Cheese Factory was closed for the day and darkness was fast approaching. As I passed by I looked out my window and beheld a magical sight. The serene little pond seemed almost aglow.
I slammed on my brakes and stopped to have a better look. The scene was mystical reminiscent of a fairy tale. The trees looking like stick men with long dark legs, ducks peacefully paddling the shimmering waters and in the distance the beautiful rolling hills. I had to try and capture it. I remember setting up my tripod right in the westbound lane of the road. Thank goodness most sensible people were already home. The road was empty, the air chilled and the silence reminiscent of my home in Montana.
As I looked through my camera at the bewitching scene before me I was instantly mesmerized. Soon it all faded to black, but the stick men, the ducks and the magical moment were captured forever and now I share it with you. Take your time. Savor the magic.
